UTICA — The second annual Pieces of HeART Art Exhibition showcased a diverse range of paintings and pottery created by artists of all abilities on Thursday at Utica City Hall. Hosted by Upstate Caring Partners, the event celebrated self-expression, inclusion, and the power of creativity and building stronger communities.
Pieces of HeART is an expressive arts program operated by Upstate Caring Partners for more than a decade. The initiative offers therapeutic art opportunities to individuals of varying abilities and ages, providing a creative outlet to explore and communicate personal thoughts and emotions.
“Pieces of HeART is all about empowering our artists of all abilities to be able to create with little to no limitations, overcome the challenges that they have, whether they’re physical or otherwise,” said Lindsay Giannatelli, recreational therapy specialist and pottery instructor. “We’re highlighting and celebrating their achievements today at Utica City Hall. … It’s so important to see and recognize their hard work. To be able to see and appreciate what the challenges these artists overcome in the day today is really something to celebrate.
Giannatelli also emphasized the importance of recognizing the artists’ dedication and resilience. “It goes to show, if there’s a will, there is most certainly a way,” she said.
Joining the event was Chef’s Express, a bakery operated by The Arc, Oneida-Lewis Chapter. The bakery offered attendees a selection of baked goods, including cupcakes, brownies and cookies. Both organizations share a mission of promoting inclusion and showcasing the abilities and talents of individuals with disabilities.
“These are two organizations that do an unbelievable amount for our entire region,” said Utica Mayor Michael P. Galime. “Whether it’s the pottery, the paintings, or the cupcakes and delicious cookies, this is a great show and it’s showcasing how we care for each other and what comes out of that. It’s a beautiful day today at city hall.”
Officials with United Caring Partners say the Pieces of HeART program highlights the impact of creative expression on emotional and mental well-being, adding that the initiative helps build confidence, connection and community through art.
Select works from the show will remain on display at Utica City Hall for the coming months.
