Supported Employment
In addition to garnering income, employment builds self-esteem, self-respect, keeps one busy and fosters hobbies and interests. For more than 20 years, the Upstate Cerebral Palsy supported employment program has helped local individuals reach their fullest potential as members of the community.
Supported employment, a collaborative effort between Upstate Cerebral Palsy and the New York State Education Department, provides vocational services to individuals who have a disability. The program staff works with individuals from high school age to adulthood to secure competitive jobs in the most appropriate employment site.
Like any employment situation, finding the right match is key; employees finding their niche at the most relevant workplace most suited to their desires and skills. At Upstate Cerebral Palsy, individuals have the chance to examine their wants, needs, aspirations, background, and transferable skills. Staff then spends time with those in search of employment, building a relationship to most effectively guide them in the direction of a suitable employer.
Even after training is complete, the job coaches provide on-going support for the employees throughout the employment period. This includes monitoring the person’s work performance and continually assessing employment stability. Services offered to clients through the supported employment program include resume writing, interview training, vocational assessment, job development, job coaching, and long-term job support.
Competitive, integrated employment provides the employee with the opportunity to use his or her talents while experiencing a greater level of independence. This productive employment environment also allows the employee to enjoy greater social inclusion. More than 60 people currently work with 35 employers across the region including Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare, the Observer-Dispatch and Turning Stone Casino Resort.
Candidates should be aware that these services are free through the Vocational and Employment Services for Individuals with Disabilities (VESID), Office of Mental Health, and Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities. To obtain a referral, call (315) 793-2536.
